چکیده

Data are often collected from wild animals that have been marked at unknown age. As a result, standard probability models, fitted by maximum likelihood, cannot incorporate agedependence in probabilities of annual survival. We propose and fit new mixture models to ring-recovery data on birds ringed of unknown age, in which it is possible to incorporate age dependence in survival. It is shown that it is important to analyse simultaneously data on animals marked as young, and of known age, as otherwise the mixture model is parameter redundant. The potential of the approach is illustrated by a new analysis of data on mallards, Anas platyrhynchos, and the wider performance of the approach is demonstrated through simulation. The models provide a way of analysing correctly large numbers of historical data sets.

Model Selection for Mixture Models Using Perfect Sample

We have considered a perfect sample method for model selection of finite mixture models with either known (fixed) or unknown number of components which can be applied in the most general setting with assumptions on the relation between the rival models and the true distribution. It is, both, one or neither to be well-specified or mis-specified, they may be nested or non-nested. We consider mixt...

Modelling mortality and migration as functions of age using PIT tagging data

In fi shery applications of tag-recovery models, recovery probabilities are typically parameterised in terms of instantaneous rates of mortality, where the mortality rate can be a function of the size or age of a fi sh. For age-dependent tag-recovery models, past work on Pacifi c halibut used a fi xedage approach, in which the age of each fi sh was fi xed at the same value for each halibut of a...

Background: Jaundice is the common cause of hospitalization of infants in the first month after birth. Therefore, detection of risk factors associated with jaundice can effect on its process and complications. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of diabetic mother's infants and comparing with infants with unknown jaundice. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, am...

Web Appendix A: Extended Models In the main paper we considered models with a separate survival probability for animals in their first year of life. We may wish to consider the survival probability separately for longer than a year, for example if an animal is juvenile for longer than a year. To include such cases we extend the models examined to consider survival separately for the first J yea...

Demographic window to aging in the wild: constructing life tables and estimating survival functions from marked individuals of unknown age.

Summary We address the problem of establishing a survival schedule for wild populations. A demographic key identity is established, leading to a method whereby age-specific survival and mortality can be deduced from a marked cohort life table established for individuals that are randomly sampled at unknown age and marked, with subsequent recording of time-to-death. This identity permits the con...
